The day when Mr Marmalade survives the hard stare...

You know Mister Marmalade, well ok maybe not in person.  But in passing. That's right Mister Marmalade loves the not to be seen till spring daisy field. As well as the horse gallop at the front.

He is such a sweet, sploggy,  charming gentlemen of a cat. Ever so polite you know (unlike you know whom!)  "Ahem, I am standing here" (Sorry Miss Furry I forgot you were there.)

This very morning, I know it always seems to happen like that, Mister Marmalade had a bit of a spring in his paws. I said to Miss Furry look at that Mister Marmalade looks very pleased with himself today. Miss Furry made a "humph"  sound. Erm ok Miss Furry some people enjoy a walk on a brisk winters day. Obviously not you though.

I wonder why he is in such a good mood, I know I'm going out to  ask. No harm in that I thought.  I ran over the field to the gallop 's where the horses practice their running. Mr Marmalade was sitting as he does every other day watching the horses run by.

"Hello Mr Marmalade, are you horse watching that's a  lovely hobbie.   I thought you looked very jaunty this morning. In fact myself and Miss Furry where just wondering what had put such a spring in your paws". Out of the corner of my eye I could see a rather animated Miss Furry in the front, sunny window waving her paws excitedly. "Ooh" I said to Mister Marmalade "I think Miss Furry is trying to get our attention".

Miss Furry doesn't come over the front way, ever.  She doesn't like the horse's, too many fast moving limbs apparently for her delicate disposition. I waved back "yoo hoo" look Mister Marmalade you wave too.  Well that didn't go down well I could feel the burning hard stare from all the way over here. Are you ok Mister Marmalade?  I think Missy hard stare is upset.

I thought it best to look the other way as it was rather uncomfortable  the feeling of  the burning hard stare burning into my back.   "I think, I had better go home now  I feel rather hot" . "Ok, Mister Marmalade very nice to see you. But I don't blame you though".
Do you know I never did find out what had given Mister Marmalade a spring in his paws. I think I'll ask him tomorrow. When Missy hard stare isn't looking...

Helen Lewins is an author. Helen was born in Northumberland but due to the closure of the coal mines, her parents moved the family to North London to take up work as publicans. After school, she started an apprenticeship with an electrical engineering medical company where she worked for many years as a Service Engineer. With a calling for something else more creative she went travelling in the UK and worked the summer in a hotel on the Jurassic Coast. This led her to study hospitality management and after graduation, she took on a role as a hotel Manager back in Northumberland. Then her life changed forever and along came her beautiful son. It became obvious early on that he was developing at a different rate from his peers. He had limited speech until he was eight years old. Eventually, after quite a long journey he was diagnosed with Autism. That is when Helen started to write about Miss Furry to entertain her son as it was based on their pet cat. It has been a very personal journey for them both and Helen hopes that Miss Furry brings joy to other children. Helen and her Son live in Northumberland with Miss Furry who does indeed spend her days patrolling the fence.
