The Missing Pumpkin... (And the return of Furella!)

Dear Friends,

It's been a long time, How are you? That's enough about you, time for a bit more of me.

Something strange happened this week. You may remember last year when Furella walked my fence with her clanking chains and BIG grrrr paws (not that I was frightened friends, as I have grrrr paws myself.)

Well, the story you are about to hear is not for the faint-hearted of cats…

The first ever story with Miss Furry: The Missing Pumpkin. (And The Return of Furella…)

Mum and I have been growing pumpkins in the garden all year. Mr Gnome loved the pumpkin patch and asked if he could live under the leaves because he said it's much better than living under rhubarb. Mrs Goat could not reach the pumpkin's leaves, and we all agreed it was the safest place for a gnome to call home. There he has been happily minding his own business eating biscuits.

Thinking friends that my fence defences have become less scary, why even Mr Marmalade can pass now, with only a shudder and as we have been growing pumpkins, I thought would ask mum if I could carve one out to put on my fence, with a grrr face for all to see. (In fact, it turns out it was so scary you could see it all the way down to the tumbledown Shepard's house!)

I thought I would test out its scariness on an unsuspecting Mister Marmalade, who nearly fainted with shock on his way to the daisy field (mud field more like) when he saw it. So shocked was he that he fell onto his back paws and tumbled into one of the bushes (oooh nasty!) Unfortunately, when he gets stuck in bushes it's hard for him to get out with all his fur and Marmalade, So once I had finished laughing in my carey sharey way, I offered some assistance and helped pull him out.

He looked at me with disgust, put his nose up skyward with such an air of dignity (quite impressive for a cat who was covered in brambles and blackberries) and off he went to the Mud Field.

Judging by Mister Marmalades' reaction my pumpkin was definitely scary and grrrrr-ey enough, and there I sat, waiting for anyone to pass all day until night... When everyone else was tucked up in bed, Mr Marmalade probably cuddling his teddy bear. (Honestly friends I would never cuddle a teddy bear how lame.)

I went to bed, leaving my lantern for all to see and ignoring the strange light from the Woods. (Maybe Mr Marvellous Mouse was having a party for Halloween...)

On Halloween Morning and after eating my breakfast with a considerable amount of treats as well as  Mr Marmalade's cat treats, (he doesn't mind honest!) I slowly walked out towards my fence at the bottom of the garden, to take up residence on the top.

To my horror, my beautiful paw-made pumpkin with extra grrrr-factor had disappeared. Initially, I thought Mr Clumsy Woodpigeon had knocked it off as he landed to deliver Mr Gnomes Mail. I looked over into the paddock, on the other side of the fence to see if it had rolled away. but no friends I could not find it...

I went over to Mrs Goat to see if she had seen or heard anything, Unfortunately, she knew nothing about the pumpkin's disappearance. Apologising, she then asked if I would like a biscuit on the way out. Declining the offer (as I am watching my figure, stop laughing!) off I went to ask someone else...

You would think the pumpkin had never been there friends, as no one seemed to know where it had gone! Even fancy paws Felicity (the one who lives in the manor house with a diamond collar) had no clue saying "I only like shiny things Miss Furry so why would a cat like me want a smelly old pumpkin". I told Miss Fancy paws "Rude... It's not a smelly old pumpkin..." But giving up, I went back home to think of a way to find my beautiful paw-made pumpkin with extra grr factor...

Sitting on my fence, it was now getting darker. I noticed that there were no pumpkins in the hamlet and thought that was strange as I was sure I had seen pumpkins put out yesterday. There were however trick or treaters walking by dressed up in costumes, knocking on people's doors, with baskets full of sweets. But no lanterns.  In the distance towards the woods, I saw the light once more, It was brighter than before...

I went to see Mr Marmalade to ask if he would like to investigate with me (Not because I'm frightened or anything, but because he needs the exercise.) Reluctantly he agreed, although he didn't understand why I would be looking for my paw-made pumpkin with extra grrr factor, when he was so pleased it was gone so off we went towards the light in the woods. (A perk of being a cat at Halloween is that no one suspects you, the trick-or-treaters walked by us like we weren’t even there.)

Approaching the wood, the light got brighter and brighter, (and I'm not sure but I think I heard a clinking noise, it was so familiar but I didn't know why.) Mr Marmalade and I stepped into the edge of the wood from the fields and gingerly looked through the bushes towards the light. There we saw the most magnificent giant cat, It was Furella, back again.

Sinking down further, (this was harder for Mister Marmalade than me friends)   as he settled down to more of a mound, with me totally flat, thinking that would do we lay there motionless.

The chanting was getting louder and louder...

All Hallows eve,
All Hallows eve,
For cats before and after me,
With my big grr paws and chains a-fire
I ask dear ancestors to release my power.
On the night of all nights, when Furella can breathe.
And once more walk free
to terrorise all cats she sees.

In the centre, I saw my beautiful paw-made pumpkin with extra grrr-factor.

Looking at Mr Marmalade I asked him "What do we do? as Furella was obviously trying to come alive, to be here for all time." Mr Marmalade was now moving grass in front of himself to disappear, thinking if I can't see her, she can't see me, and that this nightmare would soon be over.

I got my grr paws ready for another encounter with Furella, Unfortunately for me, Furella had seen me, as my white paw reflected the light from the pumpkins... Mr Marmalade was now crying and stroking his cheek with what looked like a dead Daisy as I dashed forward right into the middle of the circle, with the hamlet's pumpkins all around.

THERE NOW FOLLOWED WHAT I CALL A SCARY BATTLE EPISODE!!!...

Grabbing my pumpkin, I shouted to Mr Marmalade 'RUN!'  Just as he managed to knock all of the other pumpkins down by accident (really!) and with that, we ran back towards the hamlet, now in darkness as trick or treating was over.

Hearing the church strike midnight, It was now November The 1st, we watched as Furella's light slowly faded away, leaving the forest dark, seems like we're safe for another year friends...

THE END (Or is it?)

Helen Lewins is an author. Helen was born in Northumberland but due to the closure of the coal mines, her parents moved the family to North London to take up work as publicans. After school, she started an apprenticeship with an electrical engineering medical company where she worked for many years as a Service Engineer. With a calling for something else more creative she went travelling in the UK and worked the summer in a hotel on the Jurassic Coast. This led her to study hospitality management and after graduation, she took on a role as a hotel Manager back in Northumberland. Then her life changed forever and along came her beautiful son. It became obvious early on that he was developing at a different rate from his peers. He had limited speech until he was eight years old. Eventually, after quite a long journey he was diagnosed with Autism. That is when Helen started to write about Miss Furry to entertain her son as it was based on their pet cat. It has been a very personal journey for them both and Helen hopes that Miss Furry brings joy to other children. Helen and her Son live in Northumberland with Miss Furry who does indeed spend her days patrolling the fence.
